Increased emphasis on documenting student learning e.g. the universities act, foi ; have placed an increasing onus on us as university teachers to be clear in our communication with students on everything from routine matters to descriptions of the more intellectual aspects of course content. i deal with this increasingly by giving students all important information in writing and hope in 2002 to set up a web-site for my courses. these issues have informed changes and developments in my teaching, allowing me to modernise and adapt both course material and my delivery of it to improve quality. benefits to my academic career have matched the extra effort involved. i have managed to improve my publication list considerably 30 refereed papers and two books in 8 years ; and new skills acquired have fed into my research. this spin-off has also helped me in presenting research publications more effectively e.g. sheehan et al., 2001 ; . this paper features three-dimensional structures as well as multimedia adjuncts accessible at : biochemj bj 360 bj3600001add ; . conversely, such adjuncts have been used in teaching other courses, highlighting the fertile cross-reaction there can be between teaching and research. feedback e.g. questionnaires ; show that i have built up a reputation among students as one of the most effective lecturers in my department and faculty. i have introduced a strong theme of computer-assisted learning through most of my courses. this appeals to some students' preferred way of receiving knowledge, overcomes barriers to learning, encourages active over passive learning as well as helping them to appreciate web-accessible resources as part of the international dimension of science. the major downside to developing this has been practical difficulties posed by lack of adequate computer facilities up to now. however, new funding from a science faculty fund will allow development of a state-of-the-art computer room for delivery of such courses into the future. references: sheehan, d., o'mahony, c. and coll, m. a modification of the hanging drop method of protein crystallisation suitable for an undergraduate class practical 1998 ; biochemical education, 26, 173-175. sheehan, d. 2000 ; physical biochemistry: principles and applications john wiley & sons ltd. london. 350pp ; . sheehan, d., meade, g., foley, v. and dowd, c. 2001 ; structure, function and evolution of glutathione s-transferases: implications for the classification of non-mammalian members of an ancient enzyme superfamily. biochemical journal 360, 1-16.
The archchancellor and they-- right. anyway, katze was shown to a non-descript side entrance from which she was guided into the kitchen. some kitchens are prominent in their distinct lack of use. you know, the squeaky clean pots, perfect floor, empty sink, and the acute lack of smells. not this one. the university kitchen was full of smells, some good, some bad, some unintelligible. the only way to tell that the black dripping mass hanging from the ceiling was pots would be to use a metal detector. a broom was pushed into her hands and she was directed to a hallway. she tried to protest but trying to get a word in while the woman who katze found out was mrs. whitlow ; talked constantly about all the goings-on in the university was like trying to nail a noodle through a two-by-four. "now you just go ahead and start sweeping this hallway, gel! if you see hanything that might disturb you, just close your eyes and hwait a few moments." mrs. whitlow turned and strode back down the hall. katze looked at the broom, then at the rapidly moving figure of mrs. whitlow. "wait, but--" the older woman fluttered her hand and continued walking. "you will be fine may gel! don't warry, aye know you'll do me proud!" she faded into the distance. the hallway was empty. katze shrugged and started sweeping. at least no-one was going to question what she was doing there if she was cleaning. she leaned the broom against a wall and lifted the canvas sack off her shoulder. katze reached inside the sack and pulled out a jihadlinker. she punched in pupp's address and hit `trace.' i hope he's left it on, she thought. underneath a large stuffed alligator, left behind by the room's previous occupant who as the result of an unfortunate magic misunderstanding, the unseen university's newest faculty member carefully positioned a medicine dropper over a bubbling cauldron. the slightest wrong move could be highly inconvenient. he wiped a stray sweat droplet from his forehead. carefully. caaaaarefully. almost. aaaand. "pupp!!" .ohshit. woompf lifting the blanket off of pupp's head, katze cautiously smiled, "so. bet you weren't expecting to see me, were ya?" she handed him a mug full of what she was hoping to be water, which he promptly poured over his head, dousing his stillsmoldering hair. "katze? wha-- kat! what're you doing here?" pupp grabbed her and hugged katze tightly. he let go and held her at arms' length. "this has to be the first time i've ever seen ya in a dress. not too shabby!" he paused for a moment. "wait. what are you doing here, " he said. "well. it's a long story and free poker.
Prior to the cuts, 27, 000 immigrants, primarily documented adults and undocumented children, received the equivalent of medicaid coverage through statefunded benefits under the dshs medical assistance program. eligibility for dshs medical assistance was terminated for these children, who were made eligible for-- but not automatically enrolled in--washington's basic health plan bhp ; . the bhp provides fewer services than medicaid and requires copayments and premiums, although plan members can be sponsored by an organization that pays a share of the premium. the cost of the bhp and the requirement of a new application mean that many of the children will end up uninsured. when medicaid coverage of these children ended on october 1, 2002, 39 percent were enrolled in the bhp and 16 percent were in the process of applying foster 2002 ; . because the bhp does not include dental care, the state provided funding to clinics, particularly in eastern washington, to provide uncompensated care. no cuts were made in washington's schip program. this program remains small because the state has been unable to get federal approval to use schip funds for the children to whom coverage had been extended before schip was created in 1997. approximately 100, 000 people were affected when washington eliminated its state supplemental security income ssi ; payments. this money was used to finance the services for the developmentally disabled required under the terms of a proposed lawsuit settlement. the state is using its spending on the developmentally disabled to meet its ssi maintenance-of-effort requirement. the upper income limit of eligibility for the working connections child care program was changed from 225 percent to 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. copayments were also increased. because child care is within the "welfare box" controlled by the governor, these changes did not require legislation, but could be made through revisions to administrative regulations. no waiting lists were reported for those who remained eligible for child care subsidies. additional cuts to human services came on the administrative side. between 60 and 70 full-time equivalent staff were laid off, while others were organized out of jobs. these cuts, coupled with cuts across dshs two years earlier, eliminated 600 of the department's 18, 000 full-time-equivalent staff. in total, dshs saw a 10 percent cut to its central administration budget in fy 2003. there have been increases in departments where the number of people needed to do jobs is sensitive to caseload changes such as child protective services and developmentally disabled services ; . dshs has increased the use of technology in an effort to maintain the same quality of service while streamlining and consolidating physical presence in its offices. significantly, washington reduced state funding provided to localities by million by ending the practice of backfilling revenues lost from i-695. a much smaller assistance program for certain cities and counties was implemented and support for public health districts was retained. in addition, the state closed a juvenile rehabilitation facility and shifted some costs million ; that would otherwise have been funded in the operating budget to the capital budget. washington issued bonds to cover the latter.

Jessica monteith - the world university services of canada has been active at trent since the university opened its doors in 1964, and is still going strong. as the students were leaving trent for the summer with thoughts of essay free weekends and barbeques, mr. paul davidson and professor tim stapleton were participating in an educational initiative to further the development of an african university that has not even been built. as the executive director of the program, and a trent graduate class of `86 ; , mr. davidson was more than happy to answer a few questions, and was passionate about the work that wusc does. "wusc is an international development agency based in ottawa. we are active on over seventy campuses across canada, and the unifying thread and goal ; of wusc is to harness the power of education to make a more equitable world. it is organized into local community chapters, with active local committees who support projects like fair trade, and who might sponser refugees trent currently has two refugees at the school, whose studies have been interrupted by war ; . "trent is very active in wusc. there's something about the nature and spirit of trent that makes students think about other people in the world. the students, the faculty and the alumni have always been very active. tim stapleton ; got involved with the trip to botswana, and i was on that trip as well." prof. stapleton who is chair of the the history department at trent ; went to africa to help foster connections between trent univeristy and the university of botswana. "every year wusc conducts a mission to a particular country, with the purpose of highlighting the work that wusc does in that country and to build relationships between canadian universities and those abroad. wusc creates real contact, it takes academics from canada and they're shown the projects wusc is involved in. there is only one university in botswana right now, and one of the agendas of the trip was to discuss how canadian universities could facilitate in the creation of another university that would emphasize science and technology. the prospective university has land in palapye, but no administration, and no faculty. we spoke to the people who were setting up the univeristy, and wusc made an agreement that twenty-five students from botswana will do their masters in canada in the hopes that they will become the first professors at the new university." the university of botswana has two research priorties that are parallel to those at trent; evironmental studies and indiginous studies. prof. stapleton spoke to a lot of people at the university of botswana, the result of which there will be a faculty member visiting trent in the fall of 2008 for three months to speak about the environment and indiginous people. dr. maitseo volaane has her phd. in history, and her area of research is the impact of national parks on the san people in botswana often referred to as `bushmen' ; . "we will hopfelly have two students coming to trent from botswana for the new masters degree in history that will be starting next week, " prof. stapleton has the inside scoop in the history department. "they have been given funding, but they have to go through a lot of beuracracy in botswana to get here." the tip trent international program ; office has been working on creating an exchange program between the university of botswana and trent, and hope to have it in place by october, so that students could take advantage of it as early as next fall. prof. stapleton was all for the exchange. "we would be the first canadian university to partner that way with botswana. both universities view the logistics in the same way, while most other univesities were less compatable. i was very impressed by the facilities in botswana. the university is bigger than trent with a population of 15 000, with a much better library and an olympic size swimming pool. the one problem that i noticed was that their internet was too slow because they get their internet access through south africa. canadian students would enjoy it there, and the student volunteers already enjoy it." trent also pioneered student without borders to botswana, a volunteer program that lasts four to six weeks. prof. stapleton is "surprised that no students are on it this year. it's a great program. it's a volunteer program, and the study is a sideline. the students go there and are placed in a job. some of them do research in botswana and arrange something with a professor here to get a credit. kathy stiles is the regional director of wusc in southern africa and she handles the program there." mr. davidson and prof. stapleton sat on an advisory board to discuss the creation of the new university in palapye. "since may wusc has been back to botswana to advise on the new university." says mr. davidson. "we're not donating funds as this is the government of botswana's project, our role is advisory. we discuss what makes a university outstanding, develop administration and ensure student exchange. we work with all levels of the institution students, faculty, and administration to harness the power of educa and play poker.
