Uso-metro welcomed over 150 volunteers to the annual volunteer luncheon on saturday, april 22. held in the community center ballroom on ft. myer, the luncheon included a ceremony during which volunteers were presented uso towels as tokens of appreciation for their time and commitment. eight extraordinary uso volunteers were also given red, white, and blue uso jackets for volunteering over 1, 000 hours of their time. janice murphy, joe murphy, katherine inglima, sue hollingsworth, gloria roman, and ben blum all exceeded 1, 000 hours by volunteering at the uso lounge at bwi airport. stephen ricks has given over 1, 000 hours of his time to the outreach center at ft. belvoir, and milinda jefferson recently reached 1, 000 hours through her work with special events. in 2005 alone, 500 volunteers devoted 37, 382 total hours to uso-metro programs and services all over the washington, dc area. volunteers have helped with operation uso care package, uso-metro hospital services, and they have worked at special military appreciation and fundraising events and at our outreach centers and airport lounges. "it is so touching to see so many kindhearted people volunteering every day to help our service members and their families, " remarked uso-metro president elaine rogers. "uso-metro would not be able to do the work we do without the outstanding dedication of our volunteers.

| You may have heard more about tanya, vivian and ariel, who are our faithful supply and part-time staff as some of the staff are away on holidays, etc. where's laurie? and for some, who is laurie? laurie, our administrator is working in haliburton running an art gallery and is coming in very parttime to do her office duties. she has worked for us for eight years and she is also a former parent of claire, tony an erik who are now quite tall and very grown up! laurie's work with us has been crucial in getting us computerized, organized and she can also clean a furnace and fix toilets and even taught french for awhile. she has many talents. however, due to our financial changes and stresses and laurie's working needs, we have had to scale back our administration costs. we are currently trying to figure out how to run the place without her. this has been a challenge but also an opportunity to recreate it all. for those of you who don't know laurie is a painter. you can view her work at lauriejones . lisa's baby is due end of may, so we will have to say goodbye for a while. leslie stahl will fill her shoes. leslie is an old pro to wmcc because she worked for us for two years several years ago. she is a trained montessori teacher, a celtic scholar and a trained musician who misses the island. leslie will start mid-may and be a part of the summer camp. taz is a ryerson student doing a work placement on thursday mornings. she is also a former wmcc parent and board member. her son caleb is now at island public school. maeve and ariel are former students who have come back to do their high school community service placement.
