Just when you think you've learned everything there is to know about poker, a new window opens up that reveals a whole new world. that's the beauty of this game. there's no telling when you will be gazing at a fantastic, new and beautiful horizon. such is the world of on-line poker. it's really unfair for me to refer to it as new. after all, folks have been playing on-line in one form or another for over five years now--since planet play poker texas hold opened its virtual doors--and even before that with play money games. it isn't even honest for me to act as if my recent experience was my first. back about three years ago i started playing on party poker. i dabbled in the game on that site and on many others including poker stars, paradise poker, wsex not to be confused with a porn site ; , and ultimate bet. i played tournaments and low stakes games. but that was before i was writing regularly. so i didn't think very much about what i was doing. i hadn't played on line for a couple of years when i got this special invitation in the mail from mike sexton, celebrity host and spokesperson for party poker. he asked me to sign back up and offered me in my long inactive account no strings attached. i downloaded the program having long since deleted it from my computer ; and signed on. sure enough there was in my account! i could have withdrawn it right then if i chose to. but i figured it could help fund some interesting learning experiences. so i decided to play. and play i have. since last week when i started i've played about 30 hours all told--probably about 1, 000 hands. nearly all of them have been in live games, though i've entered a couple of tournaments as well. let me share the many lessons i've learned already--the ones that differ from my experiences with brick and mortar b&m ; games. indulge me for a few articles and maybe i'll share some things you don't know. first of all, choosing a game is not simple. the stakes start out very low with $.50 1.00 and go up to 40 for stud. i was tempted to begin at 2--since playing for pocket change seemed beneath me somehow. but as i thought about it i realized that it made more sense to start out with the lowest game possible. .00 was all the money i had in the world--since i didn't want to fund my account beyond the "gift". once i lost i'd be out. so bankroll preservation was crucial. even at .00 2.00, i could be dead in four or five losing hands. the rake is steep: 10% with a .00 cap. that's like a .00 cap in a similarly structured 10 game. very tough. fortunately, however, the games tend to be absurdly loose--very few hands heads up; nearly every hand five or six-way to fifth street. my key observation was the importance of being patient-- ultra-patient. it's tough to stare at the screen hand after hand while folding lower quality hands. but it's critical that you do so. with fewer distractions than in a live casino it's easy to try to get tricky, be overly aggressive with weak hands, or otherwise find an excuse to play. don't do it! there are so many callers that solid, tight-aggressive play is the key. more observations about this in my next column. ashley adams is the author of winning 7-card stud, kensington press 2003 ; . he has been playing 7-card stud for 40 years--and profitably in casinos for the past 10 years. he has played in casinos all over the world, including england, denmark, sweden, austria, hungary, canada and the united states, but plays most frequently at at foxwoods resort casino in ledyard connecticut. professionally, he is a union organizer and an agent for broadcasters. he can be reached at: asha34 aol.
