The raiding party of american professionals who crossed the atlantic for two recent big ticket events in europe went home almost empty-handed. the two events in question were both televised. first up was the gamingclub world omaha poker championships in dublin, ireland. this was a euro 6, 000 pot limit hold'em affair with a series of single table satellites from which the winners qualified for the final. runners-up in the qualifiers played off in a semi-final for the last final table seat. the organiser mel judah had been over in the usa canvassing some of the top names to take part. as a result there were four former wsop champions in the field - phil hellmuth, chris ferguson, carlos mortenssen and chris moneymaker. this year's champ greg raymer also played. not one of them got anywhere near the money. the furthest any of the raiders progressed was to the semi-final but the pair eric lindgren and matt dean failed in their bid to go further. there was just one woman player at the final table xuyen pham. despite the fact that she learned to play from her partner steve vladar she was long odds to prevail. but win she did and collected euro 250, 000 for her efforts - a sum which will come in handy when the couple marry later this year. a couple of weeks later at the aviation club de france it was a similar story when the first leg of the wpt series three took place. a large group of americans showed up - a mixture of pros and internet qualifiers. their presence, and money, helped swell the field to 205 players and the pool to euro 2 million plus. to put this in context it was more than double last year when just 96 hopefuls turned out. the usa players included several top professionals, among them phil ivey, chip reese and howard lederer. but when it came to the business end after three days play there wasn't an american pro in sight. chip reese was the highest placed of the usa pros finishing 11th for euro 22, 000. the final table of six comprised three from england surinder sunar, ben roberts and dave colclough, peter roche of ireland , tony g a lithuania-based australian and jim overman, an unknown player from the usa who had won his seat in an internet satellite. the presence of the ebullient tony g will make the televised version of the final a lively affair. his style is to talk his opponents into submission, telling them what they are going to do next, calling bluffs and saying why. against peter roche he called an all-in raise with 5-5 and a flop of 7-8-9. peter showed down qc-10c at which tony commented: "that's how fast i call when i have the best hand baby!". he made it through to the heads up stage, just two players remaining, against surinder sunar of wolverhampton. with a couple of decades experience and a string of wins to his name surinder was unfazed by the aussie's verbals. the crunch came when surinder held a-7 against tony's k3. the chips went in and with no help from the board - the common cards used by both players - surinder notched his biggest ever win of euro 680, 000. the runner-up received euro 340, 000. surinder revealed afterwards how he had "trained" for the event. he said he had been playing in the small wild 10 buy-in tournaments at his local casino. some of the moves made by the players in these could not have been dreamt up by the pros in the big ticket tournaments he said. and he plans to splash out on a new car - a mini. nic szeremeta is managing editor of poker europa magazine, the monthly news and views publication from the euro side of the pond. to subscribe euro 55 ; email: nicsz connectfree , and to find out what goes on in europe, go to pokerineurope.
