Notes from what's the matter with kansas? how conservatives won the heart of america by thomas frank. henry holt & co., ny. 2004 for the last 20 or more years, we have seen a backlash in america against the changes in our social and political life that began in the 1960's and 1970's. those changes were mostly progressive reforms which shifted more political and economic power to the lower classes, minorities and women. some very clever manipulators of public discourse saw the backlash against changes in our culture as an opportunity to win political support for their plan to return america to a distribution of power similar to that of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. by using "cultural values" as wedge issues, they have been spectacularly successful in getting americans to vote against their own best interests. a primary contradiction in this subplot of the backlash period is that it is the working class itself which drives the "values" movement that is doing incalculable harm to working class people. many politicians talk "values" when they are campaigning but are really concerned about the revival of unregulated capitalism. they have been successful in blaming scapegoating ; every group except the corporatists for all the troubles facing america today, e.g., "atheistic scientists, " "arrogant college professors, " "vulgar hollywood types, " and "the liberal media." but the ones doing the damage to the working class are actually the pro-business politicians and the powerful corporations and lobbyists who have slowly reversed the pattern of wealth distribution achieved during the 20th century. they are ruining the quality of life for the poorest americans by dismantling the social safety net, polluting the environment and indirectly causing a coarsening of communication among neighbors. as the corporatists know, "poverty is profitable." the goal is to produce a permanent impoverished class that can be controlled easily, people who will work for next to nothing and not complain about the lack of benefits. deregulated capitalism has no use for small town merchants or family farmers who might siphon off a small percentage of the profits to be made. farm legislation in recent decades has turned farmers into sharecroppers and the countryside into an industrial wasteland, but rural voters flock to the polls to vote for a tax cut for the wealthiest 1% of americans. the kansas republican platform of 1998 railed against abortion, homosexuality and evolution in the schools but then listed as its top priorities the repeal of capital gains taxes, support for a national sales tax, privatization of social security, the transfer of federal lands to the states and then to private owners ; and continued deregulation of industry. in short, kansans want more of what has already destroyed their quality of life. and the best kept secret is that, not only does the radical right not get what it wants on cultural issues, those issues are chosen specifically because the puppet masters know there never will be a total resolution in favor of the extremists on topics like homosexuality, abortion or religion in the schools. this is not about reaching the goals the true believers want, it is about keeping them angry enough to turn out to vote republican. as long as the system works so well, why on earth would the power brokers want to give up such an effective campaign tool? they need to stoke the anger and keep the pot simmering. conservatism can never be successful as a reform agent because, by definition, it is pulling backwards against progress. they love to see themselves as the victims of a "vast left-wing conspiracy, " but they are creating their own version of reality in which they view themselves as under attack. if anything, americans in general have been overly respectful of the religious extremists and given them more leeway than is good for the society as a whole. in the name of their cultural crusade, meanwhile, the true believers forfeit their economic interests and the quality of their lives which depend on economic security. while the pot stirrers keep up their litany of attacks on everyone and everything that will agitate their listeners and readers, they never complain about what the business class is doing to destroy our society. they can't blame corporate greed and scandals like enron, the ties of the bush administration to the energy industry and contractors getting rich rebuilding iraq, because that would be calling attention to the domain of the gop. how could they sell the republican party as the savior of our culture if they have to admit it is actually funded by and serves the interests of corporate enrichment? they get away with blasting "liberal media" without mentioning that most communication outlets are owned by huge corporations. they get away with selling george bush as a "man of the people" by ignoring his aristocratic background. right-wingers have to become increasingly shrill in order to maintain the level of agitation needed to confuse their listeners and readers. the wealthy in our country are enjoying the best years since the gilded age. their taxes are down, regulations are crumbling, they get away with not paying taxes on their yachts, but they can't let us focus on that. the great backlash began with the melding of two political factions: traditional probusiness republicans and working class folks trying to preserve what they saw as vital "family values." during the reagan era, the gop were successful in selling their party as the protector of those values while, at the same time, they began dismantling the structure that actually protects the majority of americans. after two decades, what do the "values" voters have to show for their loyalty to the gop? lower wages, more dangerous workplaces, dirtier air, new overlords who live like kings and a continually degenerating culture in moral free fall. the behavior of public figures today, including but not limited to politicians and businessmen, is less civil than ever, lying has become standard operating procedure, and yet the mesmerized flock ardently defends its slave masters. it may be harder to find a doctor who will provide abortion services, but it is vastly harder to find an american family that can live on one income. backlash constituents don't mind that what they are reading and hearing may not make logical sense. theirs is a personal political belief system concerned more with frustrations and complaints than with logical analysis or objective data. by separating "class" from economics, backlash think tanks have built a republican-friendly alternative for the disgruntled blue collar american. "kansas is ready to lead us singing into the apocalypse. it invites us to join in, to lay down our lives so that others might cash in at the top; to renounce forever our middleamerican prosperity in pursuit of a crimson fantasy of middle-american righteousness." p. 251 ; susan cunningham.
